I won't get into discussing it being s signifier, and included for a reason, cause I assume we both know this path. I guess I'm mostly trying to make myself feel better by pushing my headcanon firmly against authorial intent, since I have an unhealthy tendency to get upset with most things related to Cas and sex. (I wish I was kidding)
